Question mark Accordion icon white How long will the initiative last? Icon Plus

Anglo American has long sought to build the right ecosystem to enable hydrogen’s role in the zero-emissions passenger vehicle mix of the future. H2 Moves Berlin has been running since late 2022, and H2 Moves Brussels, Hamburg and Paris are being launched in 2024. With future cities being scoped, we envisage the overall initiative to last several years.

Question mark Accordion icon white Why is Anglo American involved in an FCEV deployment project? Icon Plus

Anglo American is one of the world’s largest producers of platinum group metals, which are a vital ingredient for hydrogen fuel cells and electrolysers. We are a longstanding support of initiatives to accelerate the adoption of platinum-enabled hydrogen technologies – for instance co-founding the Hydrogen Council in 2017, and spinning out AP Ventures, a hydrogen-focused venture capital fund with US$400m under management in 2018.

Question mark Accordion icon white Where do you get the hydrogen from? Icon Plus

Each H2 Moves city project has its own source of hydrogen. This includes third parties such as H2 MOBILITY Deutschland, who have four fuelling stations in Berlin, as well as proprietary sources, such as Hype's growing network of zero carbon hydrogen stations in Paris.

Question mark Accordion icon white How much will a ride cost me? Icon Plus

Each H2 Moves project has different partners operating different taxi booking models. For app-based projects (such as H2 Moves Berlin, Brussels, and Paris), the price is typically displayed before the booking and reflects a quote based on journey distance and car availability.

Question mark Accordion icon white How do you refuel with hydrogen? Icon Plus

You fill up with hydrogen the same way you fill up with petrol or diesel. Open the tank cover, affix the nozzle, and start filling. The only notable difference is that hydrogen is a gas, not a liquid. Thanks to the high compression of the hydrogen, an average refuelling process takes only about three minutes.

Question mark Accordion icon white Is it dangerous to for passengers and drivers to use hydrogen cars? Icon Plus

Hydrogen cars are not dangerous. After years of its use in transport, no hydrogen-specific risks have been identified. On the contrary, hydrogen has advantages over conventional fuels, primarily because it is fourteen times lighter than air. For example:

  • Unlike conventional fuels, no immediate fire-load forms under the vehicle in the event of a leak. The hydrogen rises steeply and dissipates quickly in the ambient air.
  • All hydrogen-carrying components are located outside the passenger compartment.
  • Vehicle sensors detect escaping hydrogen and close safety valves if necessary.
Question mark Accordion icon white Why platinum? Icon Plus

Platinum is one of the six platinum group metals (PGMs), together with ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, and iridium. Platinum is one of the most effective and durable catalysts, enabling chemical reactions. It is used in fuel cell technology to catalyse the process by which hydrogen releases energy, which in an FCEV can then power an electric motor.
